Cape Verde, Africa is an archipelago of islands with a volcanic origin that was conquered by the portuguese in the 15th century. When the first portuguese arrived they found these volcanic islands uninhabited with abundant vegetation and an incredible blue sea. 1462 is the date that marked the arrival of the first Coloners, although they do not discard the fact that arabs probably were there first. The first disembarkment happend in Santiago and founded the Ribeira Grande. Afer the colonization the economy started to make a turn around sugar cane.
Since the colonization by the portuguese, these island became an important interest spot for strategic hideouts. In the 16th century this archipelago turned into stopover point for great big ships, due to it´s great strategic location. It became a place where agriculture and massification as well as the attacks of pirates were a normal every day occurrance. It is for this reason that around the 18th century the agriculture took a downfall and the cape verdians started to immigrate to other places like Angola, Mozambique, Brazil, and Senegal. In teh 19th century the archipelago took a plunge and hunger and corruption were the main motives.
In the 20th century history began to take a favorable turn for Cape Verde, Africa. In 1951 Cape Verde became part of Portugal as the province of ultramar, but the ambition didn´t subside there, years later Guinea and Cape Verde make there independent sentiment known and in 1961 the guerilla occured. In 1974 the Cape Verde colonial regimen fell and as a consequence in 1975 it gained it´s independence.
1975-Actuality
The first thing they did after gaining independence was to re-forest the entire island. Agricultural reforms, the expansion of forests, and fishing was made important since the scarse rain impeded the growth of the agriculture.
In the 80´s the harvest took a downfall, the debt outside the country was of more than 100 million dolars and the hunger in the country caused to ask for help outside the country. In the beginings of the 90´s the situation began to better itself and they started to live off of their land and fruits of the sea as well as they finally were able to reforest. This gave them the possibility to not have to ask for outside help.
In the mid 90´s when the word tourism started to become important to the country of Cape Verde, the infrastructures began to shine, roads were built, hospitals, private investing, and everything that has taken them until today, a beautiful tourist destination, and a dreamy archipelago! |
